Some even call a bladder infection a urinary tract infection, or UTI which is an infection that affects part of the urinary tract, such as the bladder, kidneys, ureters, or the urethra. According to research  majority of all women get at least one bladder infection at some time in their lives. However, a man's chance of getting cystitis increases as he ages, due to impact of an increase in prostate size.

Health Care professionals aren't  really sure of the exact reason women have several bladder infections than men. They suspect it may be because women have a shorter urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the bladder. This relatively short passageway that is only about an inch and a half long makes it easier for bacteria to find their way into the bladder. Also, the opening to a woman's urethra lies close to both the vagina and the anus. That makes it easier for bacteria from those areas to get into the urinary tract.

In elderly people, bladder infections are often difficult to diagnose. The symptoms are less specific and are frequently blamed on aging. Older people who suddenly become incontinent or who begin acting lethargic or confused should be examined by a doctor for a bladder infection.

Bladder infections are not serious if treated right away. But they tend to recur in some people and that is why is best advised to to treat the underlying causes of a bladder infection and to take preventive steps to keep them from coming back.

    What Causes Bladder Infections ?

Bladder infections are caused by germs or bacteria that enter through the urethra and goes straight into the bladder. Normally, the body is able to remove the bacteria by clearing it out during urination, But sometimes, however, the bacteria attach to the walls of the bladder and multiply quickly, overwhelming the body’s ability to destroy them, resulting to a bladder infection.

Women sometimes contact bladder infections through sex. Vaginal intercourse makes it easier for bacteria to reach the bladder through the urethra. It is believed that the risk for bladder infection increases with frequent sex.
