The first most important point is "Hygiene" - proper washing of the hand and rising, and   drying before and after handling them.

Don't wear contact lenses for a longer period than recommended.

Store lenses in the proper lens storage case and replace your case every three months or sooner. Clean the case after each use, and keep it open and dry between cleanings.

Use only products recommended by your eye doctor to clean and disinfect your lenses. Saline solution and re wetting drops are not designed to disinfect lenses.
  
Remove your contact lenses before swimming or entering a hot tub.

Put your contact lenses on before applying makeup. 

Never apply eyeliner between your lashes and your eye when using a  contact lens. Apply eyeliner only on the portion of your lashes that is well away from your eye.

To remove eye makeup, wash and dry your hands. Then remove your contacts, being careful not to bump them into any makeup.

Replace your eye makeup frequently when you are using a contact lens — at least every three months. Don't use old eye makeup, because over time bacteria will get into the product and then into your eyes, where it can cause an infection. One way to tell if your makeup is too old is if it smells funny. Also, don't share your eye makeup with others.
If you like to wear colored contact lenses for cosmetic reasons, then It's still vital to observe careful hygiene and not to wear them for too long. Also, buy them from a reputable source. 

It's also important to avoid using creams and lotions before handling your lenses. If you have cream on your fingertips, it can cloud the lenses and thereby making it to be very uncomfortable. Also be careful with using creams around the eyes.

Finally, always store your contact lenses in a suitable container and sterilize it as often as recommended, replacing the case when necessary. Use a recommended solution, not water, to keep the lenses moist.
